Qualitative Interpretive Metasynthesis of Parents’ Experiences of Perinatal Loss

ObjectiveTo identify and synthesize common, experiential themes from qualitative studies of parents who experienced perinatal loss.Data SourcesWe searched PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO for articles about parents’ experiences loss.Study SelectionWe included research on loss published in English the last 10 years. We excluded perspectives or health care professionals persons other than biological parent loss, systematic reviews, outcome studies, gray literature.Data ExtractionWe used a priori inclusion exclusion criteria identified five which was described perspectives. extracted thematic findings supporting quotes each article documented them table subsequent synthesis.Data SynthesisWe metasynthesis interpretive model to studies. Findings were synthesized into one overarching theme, The Paradox Perinatal Loss, four subthemes: Complex Emotional Responses, Prenatal Bonding–Acknowledging Personhood, Interactions With Health Care Professionals, Traversing Social Sphere.ConclusionOur indicate that is often transformative event during experience multiple losses intense, complex emotions. with greatly affected pregnancy experience, places unique position positively influence overall experiences. Therefore, it important develop protocols related ensure staff are adequately trained equipped this experience. synthesis may also inform future development theory bereavement surrounding loss.
